Le Carrelage au damier, 1992

Inside the mouth, on the first level, the floor is covered with black and white tiles set in a checkerboard pattern, into which shards of mirror have been inserted. Created by Niki de Saint Phalle, this work evokes the flags of Jean Tinguely’s beloved auto races. Installed in 1993, this floor was also intended to cover the second level, but Niki de Saint Phalle finally decided to opt for patinated metal sheets.
